In Life You Have Two Choices, Fat or Fart: What I Learned from “Sugar: The Bitter Truth”

A co-worker of mine recently read and was telling us about “Why We Get Fat and What We Can Do About It.” It seemed interesting and while looking it up I found this video that covers much of the same material. I know this sort of thing isn’t what I usually post…but I think health is obviously very important and a big adjustment when you graduate. You have to make way more decisions concerning food on your own (no more meal plan!) than you did in college. Plus, finding a job and working your first job is stressful, which can lead to bad eating, lack of exercise…you know the drill.

A lot of this video includes things you’ve heard before; soda is bad for you, exercise is important, how over eating happens…but the difference is he tells us why, and the answers aren’t ones you’ve likely heard before. He also explains how your body deals with glucose versus fructose in biological terms. I haven’t digested this much science since tenth grade biology…but it was surprisingly engaging.

I highly recommend watching “Sugar: The Bitter Truth” it it’s entirety (and really watching, not watching and surfing the web and checking email). I put some of my big takeaways below for those lacking attention spans.

Content Marketing Based SXSW Panel Proposals: Please Vote for Your Local N00b

A few months ago I was super excited to get an email from Amy Vernon, suggesting we work together to put together a SXSW panel proposal. The topic we chose was a combination of the two panels I organized for Columbia’s Social Media Weekend.

Our SXSW Panel: Branded Content: We’re All Publishers Now.

I’m also really excited to be on proposal as a speaker for a panel organized by Megan Murphy: Let’s Get Ready to Tumblr: Publishers & Community.

Below are the details. I would be majorly honored if you’d vote for these panels. I’m a n00b and all support is greatly appreciated. I really believe in the ideas behind these topics and both panels are filled with super smart, accomplished, and talented creatives. If you’re not going to SXSW, vote to support your network and good ideas.

Branded Content: We’re All Publishers Now

The Internet has made everyone a publisher. Even brands are now doing what used to solely be the domain of media companies: creating compelling content. Great content is being used to gain fans, inform customers and increase exposure on the Internet. This panel will discuss the principles of successful viral content – whether articles, infographics or videos and how companies can apply these to branded content. And we’re talking about more than just slapping your logo on a pie chart. We’ll discuss how to get started, measure results and set goals, as well as the importance of a consistent strategy. You’ve heard the phrase “content is king” over and over again; this panel will show how and why.

  2. Shane Snow – Contently
  3. Amy Vernon – Hasai, Inc
  4. Leslie Bradshaw – JESS3
  5. Jon Steinberg – BuzzFeed

Let’s Get Ready to Tumblr

Millions of people are sharing the things they do, love, create, think, and discover more than ever on Tumblr. In June of 2011 it was announced that Tumblr hosts even more blogs than WordPress—and it’s still growing! This success is a direct reflection of the new ways in which people are engaging with content, and the top companies in entertainment, news, and fashion are setting up shop and creating strong, loyal communities here. Though publishing has undergone massive changes, many traditional media outlets are still turning a blind eye to the digital age. This panel will be an opportunity to hear from several publishing brands, from those that started from scratch to established online and traditional content providers. These companies are not only recognizing but also embracing Tumblr as a serious method for gathering and sharing information with their communities and so should you. The time of cultural curation has arrived and it’s all happening on Tumblr.

  1. Mark Coatney – Tumblr (Moderator)
  2. Amy Vernon – Hasai, INC
  3. Russ Marshalek – Flavorpill
  4. Jared Keller – The Atlantic
  5. Emily Miethner – RecordSetter.com

Girl Crush Zine Launch Party: Classy Content and Celebration

Girl Crush Zine is the brain child of Jenna Wortham and Thessaly La Force. Contributors include Starlee Kine, Emma Straub, Jennifer Egan, and Maris Kreizman. The Girl Crush Zine is a collection of writing and illustrations that are an ode to the strong admirations we have for the most amazing women in our lives (or women we watch from afar, wishing for a way for them to become part of our lives).

But it’s also that she’s inspiring. That she’s doing something cool and with style, that she has found a voice that’s totally hers and also totally relatable. That, in some weird way, she makes you realize that it wouldn’t be hard to do what you’ve always dreamed of doing.

I’ve been looking forward to this publication since I saw the call for submissions a few months ago.

The launch party was a great time with lots of amazing folks there to celebrate the release of the Girl Crush. I was able to meet some of the contributors and ran into other fantastic folks like Jacob Krupnick, Youngna Park, and Anne Marsen of Girl Walk All Day and most of the Skillshare team.

NY Creative Interns has been a great vehicle for myself and the team to reach out to our girl crushes. We’ve had tons of amazing female professionals get involved and are proud that all our panels but one have been majority female.

In September we have a panel at The New School, “Start Something: Why Every Creative Needs to Be an Entrepreneur.” Our speakers so far include Lauren Leto, Co-Founder of Texts from Last NightLaurel Touby, Founder of Mediabistro, and Audacia Ray, Founder of The Red Umbrella Project. Girl Crush mecca!

I think it’s really important to support these types of events and projects and surround yourself with talented and inspirational folks, male and female. It helps you to dream big and find the motivation to make things happen.

Buy a copy of Girl Crush for yourself (and your girl crush) here.

PS: I also have girl crushes on the entire NY Creative Interns team.

Why You Should Hire My Best Friend Amber Young

–Update: Amber is now employed at the Franklin Museum in PA. Boy are they lucky!–

Amber Young is one of the most driven, talented, passionate people I know. She’s also my best friend. The public at large is in luck. Amber’s contract with the American Cancer Society is over and she is now a free agent.

Why You Should Hire Amber:

She Makes Things Happen

Amber interned for American Cancer Society for a year during school and During that time She went above and beyond expectations by organizing a Hofstra Making Strides Team. She managed to get over 100 students came to Central Park in the pouring rain. Beyond the obvious motivator of supporting a good cause…people wanted to support Amber; because she rocks.

She Cares About the Community

Amber recently participated in the Girls Inc. College Life Workshop panel to help young girls get perspective on the transition between high school and college.

8 Things I Learned After a Year at My First (Social Media) Job

You got a job in the field you majored in. You’ve had internships. You went to your career center for 401k workshops. Even if you’ve done all those things and more, your first job out of school is filled with so many new things it can be hard to keep up.

For the past year I’ve been the Social Media Marketing Coordinator at Sterling Publishing and I can’t imagine a better first job out of school. Today I start a new job as the Community Manager at RecordSetter (more on that adventure in my next post). This post is dedicated to all the confused recent grads starting their first jobs and for those looking for guidance in their new gigs. I know these are tips I’m going to be keeping in mind as I move on to my new job.

Things Happen Quickly When You Have Co-Workers Supporting Your Ideas

One of my fastest moving projects was getting social media copy (including hashtags!) on some of our print books. Because another co-worker in production took interest in helping making it happen, we were able to push it forward within the week. This is pretty incredible considering I didn’t actually know much about the actual process of printing a book. It was really clutch to have the support of another department.

Going Beyond the 9-5 is Fun

I always tried to think of Sterling outside working hours and a lot of cool things happened as a result. For instance, when Jenny Blake asked for ideas for gift bag goodies for her Life After College Book Launch Party, I suggested custom ecosystem notebooks. She loved the idea and bam, I had made my first sale! Another fun example, at a Community Manager meetup I met folks from Burda Style and connected them with our Lark Crafts team; which lead to a great partnership between the two websites.

Attending Industry Events Can Lead to Great Things

When you start a job in an unfamiliar industry it is definitely in your best interest to meet folks in your industry who can help guide you and give advice. The best way to do it? Events! I met tons of great people through Young to Publishing, Digital Book World, and Publishing Point, to name a few. Result? I got great interviews, found partners for promotions, and was invited to more events.

Hustle 101 – Networking for Recent Grads: Skillshare Class Recap

Last night I taught my first solo Skillskare class, Hustle 101: Networking for Recent Grads. Meeting people was how I found my way in my first year out of school, how I found my job, and how I started NY Creative Interns. I’ve definitely made a lot of mistakes and learned a lot along the way. Thus, this class was born.

We had a great mix of attendees, most from out of state (which is so impressive to me, I’ve never made a huge move).

Topics Covered:

  • What is Hustle?

  • Why Going To Events is Important

  • How to Stand Out

  • How to Find Great Events

  • The Art of Reaching Out

3 Incredibly Inspirational Talks: Evan Roth, Alexis Ohanian, and Christina Xu

Below are fantastic talks from a few of my favorite career heroes. These are people who inspire me to make things happen. I also really admire their presentation style. They are all extremely captivating and keep the audience engaged by showing fantastic visuals and making folks laugh.

A little background on the roundup. I’ve been a fan of Evan Roth since before I got into social media when I saw him speak at Hofstra a year ago. Alexis recently spoke at our NY Creative Interns event, and Christina has a foundation named after one of my favorite words…awesome.

What are some of your favorite talks? Share in the comments.

Recent Grads: 5 Essential Tips and Things to Do This Summer

It’s half way through summer and almost two months since this year’s graduates were released upon the world. This time last year I was still unemployed holding down two internships and hustling, hustling. Here are some of the things I did that helped me find my way and jumpstart my career.

1) Meet People

There are so many talented and cool people in this city…start meeting them. Here’s my personal list of the 12 best tech and social media event listings in NYC. One of the best places to start looking for events is definitely Meetup.com. And don’t just meet people who happen to be at events you go to…make it a point to seek people out who you really want to meet, and contact them.

2) Volunteer Your Skills to Gain More

Are you stuck in recent grad limbo; unable to get an internship because you can’t receive credit and still in the midst of you full-time job search? Consider volunteering. Catchafire is a great place to start.

Catchafire’s mission is to improve the quality of the volunteer experience by providing pro bono opportunities for skilled professionals. Catchafire’s vision is to make it easy for every professional to use their skills for good.

If you have 1-3 years experience in your field from internships or freelancing you can volunteer your skills to help a non-profit. Want to learn more? Come to our event July 20th at 6:30pm, “Why Catchafire, Develop Your Portolio by Doing Pro Bono.”

3) Spend a Day at a Coworking Space

Coworking spaces are a great way to meet people and get some serious work done. There are some that are free, some with free trial days, pay by day, etc. To start try NY Night Owls at New Work City or The Wix Lounge.

4) Learn Some Social Media Skills

Listing social media as a skill on your resume is a huge plus. Take the time to learn more during your unemployment so you can really take initiative when you finally land a gig. For tips check out How to Get Your Start in Social Media in 5 Steps. Social media is also an amazing way to find gigs, no matter what your field. Want to learn more about social media and the job search? Come to our Land An Internship Using Social Media Skillshare class tonight, July 6th.

5) Start a Side Project

Whether you have a job yet or not, try starting something for fun on the side. Why does Google have a 20% project? Because they know how important it is to be working on something you truly enjoy and love. Write a musical, start a blog, paint…find some friends and do something cool.

Do you have any tips for fighting the recent grad blues? Share in the comments.
